Be Careful of Shady Contractors and Products!

Hurricane season here in Myrtle Beach always brings things like shady contractors and bad products to top of mind awareness. The thing is, hurricanes are pretty much always on our mind here when we’re thinking about our projects. We’re either in the middle of the season, prepping for it, or recovering from it.

This most recent season, as I drove around surveying damage and checking on clients, I noticed a few jobs I wanted to point out.

We build carports, but not the ones like you see for sale on the side of the road. Our carports are more like this, and meet all wind codes and inspections.

The ones you buy on the side of the road are much cheaper, but they don’t meet code, and aren’t approved by anyone for this area. Here’s one I found after tropical storm winds came through-

I was in a local mobile home park working on a patio cover the other day and saw this at a nearby house.

It looks good, but it may not look good for long. You might not be able to tell from looking, but this does not meet code. As a matter of fact, the way this was built hasn’t met code for over a decade. After asking, I found out that the contractor built it without a permit. This will create all kinds of problems down the road if the homeowner tries to sell. Not only that, don’t count on your contractor coming back to repair it after it blows down.

Pretty much everything we do has to have a permit. This means that it also meets certain building codes. All in all, it means more safety for you and your family. If you use a contractor other than us, just be sure he’s doing it right. If you never see a permit posted on site, that’s a good hint that he’s playing it wild and loose.

Thanks!

Dave, a guy who’s become an expert at filling out permit applications

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day is a day recognized worldwide for nearly 48 years after millions of people took the streets to protest the negative effects that 150 years of industrial development had on the planet. Since, Earth Day Network’s mission is to “diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide” and has brought the environmental issues onto the world stage with over 200 million active people in 141 counties taking part.

Ocean Breeze Exteriors recognizes this day’s worthy cause and we pride ourselves in offering energy-efficient outdoor living solutions. From our Insulated Patio Covers housing Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) insulation, to our environmentally-friendly yet highly technological LifeRoom, our suppliers are industry leaders in outdoor living solutions that fit your needs, wants, and desires that not only fits your budget, but lowers your carbon footprint and Ocean Breeze Exteriors is proud to offer these line of products.

Expanded Polystyrene Foam (EPS) is an ideal choice in green building designs; it substantially reduces greenhouse gas emissions when utilized as insulation. According to epsindustry.org, “EPS insulation can return up to 200 times the amount of energy required to produce it, and reduce emissions by up to 100 times the volume produced during the manufacturing process.”

It is because of this and its energy-saving properties that we decided to utilize this material in our Insulated Patio Covers. When compared to that of fiberglass insulation, the energy required to produce EPS insulation is 24% less. We utilizes EPS within our insulated panels to create a strong, durable Patio Cover that can be used year round in even the harshest of summer conditions.

LifeRoom by Four Seasons is also manufactured utilizing EPS foam core and despite its highly technological components, LifeRoom uses less energy than a waffle iron. From remote-controlled screens, soothing blue LED mood lighting, and SoftBreeze/CoolMist technology, LifeRoom creates an outdoor oasis that allows you to enjoy everything you love about being outdoors with all the comforts of being indoors.

The light-emitting diode (LED) is one of today’s most energy-efficient lighting option. According to energy.gov, “LEDs…use at least 75% less energy, and last 25 times longer, than incandescent lighting.” Additionally, widespread usage of LED lighting can generate a total savings of more than $30 billion within the United States alone!

LifeRoom’s SoftBreeze and CoolMist technology takes advantage of energy-efficient laminate airflow and evaporative cooling respectively to cool down the room up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.  Evaporative cooling is the reduction in temperature resulting from the natural evaporation of a liquid which removes latent heat from an environment, a process that is 75% more energy-efficient than conventional air conditioners. This cooling process is based completely on natural processes which is far safer for the environment, since no foreign chemicals are being released to cool down a particular area. Additionally, since LifeRoom’s SoftBreeze and CoolMist system requires only enough electricity to power the pump and fan units, operational costs are cut in half and best of all, evaporative cooling is touted as emitting low CO2 emissions than that of other methods.

Celebrate Earth everyday with our line of energy-efficient, earth-friendly outdoor living solutions.

Hurricane Repair at the Blue Cross-Blue Shield Facility

Even months after Hurricane Matthew swept through the area we’re still doing repairs to area homes and businesses.

The hurricane tore off almost 200′ of walkway covering at the Blue Cross-Blue Shield facility in Surfside Beach. We were more than happy to help out by not only making the repairs but also beefing up the structure to make it stronger. When it was originally built, the wind codes were not as stringent as they are now.
