Did you know the VA offers FREE grant assistance for qualified Disabled Veterans?

Did you know the VA offers FREE grant assistance for qualified Disabled Veterans?

This is huge!

I’m a disabled Marine Corps veteran and my dad and the founder of Ocean Breeze is also a Disabled Veteran, so it thrills us to be able to help other vets get the assistance they need.

We focus on exterior remodeling and many of the projects we build may fit into what you qualify for.

  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Wider or modified decks
  • Modified steps
  • Retrofitting existing exterior structures with grab bars, handles, etc.
  • And more in the VA adaptive housing guide

If you are a Disabled Veteran, care for one, or know one, please pass on this information.

A wheelchair ramp we built in Pirateland Campground.

There was extremely limited for space on this home.
We were able to modify his existing deck for more space.
There was just enough room to meet all code requirements.

David R. Powers, Ocean Breeze Exteriors founder and owner

This is my dad, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and a Bronze Star recipient.

Although you’ll still see him on just about every jobsite, he suffers from numerous ailments related to several years in a self-propelled artillery unit and exposure to Agent Orange.

What’s Your Best Tip or Trick for Home Repairs?

I’m inspired to write this post as I’m experimenting for the first time with Flex Seal tape on a plumbing leak at my house. I’ve never tried any of their products before, but I’ve always been tempted to after watching the infomercials. I’ll let you know how it goes with my fix.

I did use some of our roof caulking and Peal and Seal roof tape to fix several holes in my kayak. Worked great. It’s not pretty, but it works.

So what are some of your tips and tricks? Feel free to send me an e-mail back or you could post it straight to our company Facebook page. That way you can post pics, which is even better.

I’d love to see your unique uses for duct tape, epoxy, WD-40, or whatever.

There just might be a prize in it for the best one!

Dave, the guy with a roll of Flex Tape and a small puddle under the pipes

One of Our Projects Got Picked up by Michael’s

Something we don’t even do for income here at the business got picked up by Michael’s Stores for their Inspiration Wall, and I wanted to brag on the person responsible.

For those of you that have been by our showroom, you’ve probably seen our window flower boxes. We’re proud of them, as it throws a little bit of color into the industrial park and our large gray warehouse.

But there’s a downside. My flowers keep dying. We’re surrounded by concrete and blacktop, and we just can’t keep them alive. Frankly, I was getting tired of buying another $100 worth of flowers each month and spending an hour replanting everything.

Here’s a picture of the desert wasteland version-

So I cheated and bought a bunch of artificial flowers and turned it over to my crafty wife. Boom!

She redid the boxes, and I posted some pics on Instagram to brag on her.

Then Michael’s asked permission to repost them to their Inspiration Wall. This made me super proud of my wife and made her pretty excited about her flower design work.

She usually helps me out in the office, but if any of you want some great-looking flowers that won’t die around your sunroom, give me a call.

Doctors are Writing Prescriptions for Outdoor Time

Our goal as a business is to build projects that help you enjoy the outside parts of your property as much or more than the inside.

We spend way to much time inside, and it’s begun to affect us medically. It affects us so much so that doctors are now prescribing “outdoor time” as a treatment for some illnesses.

Check out this article from a newspaper in Oregon for more information on how physicians are responding to inside-itis. Click HERE for the article.

If we can do anything to help you get outside more, give us a call. We build projects that…

  • Provide shade for your patio
  • Keep bugs from ruining your outside time
  • Protect your home in a hurricane and still allow you to see outside
  • And more!

Are Birds Leaving Their, ahem, Mark on Your Outdoor Project?

A past client of ours called in the other day with a special request. We had installed a pergola for him awhile back. The project was perfect, but the birds were making a mess of it by perching on top and using it as a bathroom.

I know. Birds can be pretty inconsiderate like that.

We had a few ideas for him, but I figured some of you might be experiencing the same issue, so I wanted to pass these on to you as well. I’ll list a few of the most common ideas we’ve seen work over the years along with links to them on Amazon. If you’d rather buy local, you can probably find these at a neighborhood hardware store or big box store as well.

Pretty much all of these are DIY items if you have a tall enough ladder, but if you need us to install any of them, just give us a call.

  1. Scare Tape- https://amzn.to/2U4SJnq
  2. Scare Disks- https://amzn.to/2WsT8gj
  3. Owl Decoys- https://amzn.to/2HXag9P
  4. Bird Spikes- https://amzn.to/2WoMIP8
  5. Ultrasonic Repeller- https://amzn.to/2HKcCtA

I hope these help you out,

Dave, the guy that helps you keep the birds away

The Sunroom is the New Man Cave

For years Man Caves have been found in spare bedrooms, basements, and garages. Now it is finally time for the sunroom to be the new Man Cave!

We have been building sunrooms and enclosing screen porches and patios for over 30 years, and we have seen them take on many uses.

  • Extra dining room
  • Relaxation room
  • Reading room
  • Spot to see the view of the ocean or golf course
  • Office

But more and more we are seeing them turned into man caves. It does not take much extra once our job done, or you can have us do it for you.

Here are the basics I would recommend for a sunroom man cave:

  • A decent size television. This is a necessity for watching sports or zombie movies. Depending on the sunroom type, be sure you buy a TV that’s will hold up out there, and position it so the glare does not affect it at prime viewing times either.
  • A good celing fan. Buy one that looks nice and is big enough to deliver good air movement.
  • Climate control. A new sunroom, especially one that enclosed a screen room was not engineered to run off your home’s AC and heat as efficiently as rooms in the main house. I always recommend additional HVAC so you can maintain your comfort.
  • Comfortable furniture. You don’t have to keep the all-weather patio furniture in there. Drag your favorite chair out there or go buy a new one.

Those are the basics. If you really want to jazz it up, here are a few more recommendations:

If we can help you fulfill your man cave dreams with a sunroom space, be sure to give us a call.

We Want to Help You Slow Down and Relax

When I was little, I assumed we’d all be moving around in flying cars like the Jetsons by now, but no. Instead, cars still roll around on the roads, and we’re still hooked on fossil fuels.

It’s almost like the future just stopped moving forward.

After 30 years in business, we’re still using the same tools and techniques to build your porches, sunrooms, and awnings. Really, the only big change we’ve seen is in rechargeable batteries for our drills. Everything else is about the same.

But, you know, there’s nothing wrong with traditional and old school things. I think sometimes we all need to relax more and enjoy the things we have.

I’d love to install an awning so you can enjoy your porch in the shade.

I’d love to build a front porch on your house so you can wave at the neighbors and watch our kids bike around.

I’d love to screen in your porch so you can enjoy the backyard without the mosquitos.

If I can build a project on your home that helps you enjoy life a little more and slow down when you’re home, then my mission is complete. We’re not just here to build things and make money. We’re here to help folks enjoy life more.

Dave, just a simple guy who likes to build things that bring happiness

PS- Here’s a great example of what front porches were meant for…

Is It Spring Cleaning Time?

Spring cleaning is a bit of a misnomer. After all, we sometimes call a heavy cleaning ‘spring cleaning’ no matter what time of year it is.

That’s why I wanted to send this out to all of you. No matter what season you’re in right now, you might look out at your porch and say…

“Ugh! Look at all that yellow mess from the pollen.”

“Oh no, the dog/cat/ferret/child chewed through another screen.”

“All the dust from the construction site next door is horrible.”

If you’re saying anything like that, maybe it’s time for a ‘spring cleaning’.

If you don’t have the time, get in touch. We have a guy who cleans porches and patios.

If you want to clean it yourself and have one of our awnings or vinyl window installations, call or e-mail us for specialized instructions or cleaner. I have a sheet of instructions I can send you, and we sell the vinyl cleaner in the office.

The main thing is, we want you to have a nice clean patio or porch that you can be proud of and enjoy without worrying about spending so much time taking care of it.

If we can help with that in any way, don’t hesitate to call.

Thanks,

David Powers, your guide to enjoying the outside parts of your home
