Update on Sunroom Window Shipdates

Just wanted to send out an update on vinyl window ship dates.

If you’re planning on getting a sunroom done BEFORE the next pollen season, get that contract in soon.

A project I ordered Custom Windows Systems windows for recently came back with a late February ship date. PGT Eze-Breeze is even further out into late March.

Even our new showroom windows are late in arriving.

If you want to protect your porch, furniture, etc from the pollen and spring rains, get with me as soon as possible to get the project rolling.

Dave, a guy who hates having to hose the pollen off his porch furniture just to sit down

Need Help Cleaning Vinyl Windows?

I had some customers ask the other day about cleaning their vinyl windows, so I wanted to send out the same info for everyone else as well.

“We have the vinyl windows with screens in our porch. We love it! You gave us some vinyl cleaner that we can use for the interior that is not so practical for the exterior. Is there a safe soap and water option to clean the exteriors with? I am worried about the soap. Is there one that works using a hose?”

PGT Eze-Breeze makes a special cleaner and preservative that is great for the windows, but a little expensive. We sell it here in the office if you need it.

If you want to save a few bucks, use it on the inside, and you can use soap for the outside and the screens. But always clean the outside and the screens first.

For soap, I always recommend mixing equal parts Woolite and water in a spray bottle or a spray bottle that attaches to a hose. Below are links to order each.

Woolite ( https://amzn.to/2y7QC8y )

Water Hose Spray Connector  ( https://amzn.to/2zQM4nt )

Empty Spray Bottlehttps://amzn.to/2Zazv0W )

Here’s an instruction sheet from PGT Eze-Breeze that goes into more detail:

If anything is broken or needs maintenance, bring the affected panes by the office or you can buy spare parts kits here at the office.

In addition, here’s a short video I made that gives a few extra tips about cleaning them- DIY Vinyl Window Cleaning

Lastly, if you don’t want to clean them at all, we can do it. Just give us a call.

Thanks,
Dave

Seeking Constant Improvement

It’s really easy in any venture to get stuck in old ruts and forget that the world is changing around us. We’re constantly on the lookout for new products and new ways of doing things here at Ocean Breeze Exteriors.

On that note, I wanted to tell you about a new product we have available to us. It is mainly geared for condo porches or other structures up two levels or more. In other words, this applies to all of our customers with stilt houses as well.

To enclose higher level porches isn’t easy, but we’ve been doing it for years. You can see that from the photo below from Grande Dunes. We either have to rent specialized equipment, set up multiple levels of scaffolding, or manhandle the windows in pieces to install from the inside. None of those methods are easy or inexpensive…or fun for our team.

There’s a new product on the market that allows for three season vinyl pane windows to be installed from the inside of the balcony with a flexible metal screen frame that can be folded and popped in from the inside as well. In the photo below you can see me bending the frame to show how flexible it is.

If you have a higher level porch and wanted to enclose it, now is the time. It’s cheaper and easier to do, and we’re just the folks you need to do it.

Thanks!

David Powers, the strongman bending metal in the photo!

Is It Spring Cleaning Time?

Spring cleaning is a bit of a misnomer. After all, we sometimes call a heavy cleaning ‘spring cleaning’ no matter what time of year it is.

That’s why I wanted to send this out to all of you. No matter what season you’re in right now, you might look out at your porch and say…

“Ugh! Look at all that yellow mess from the pollen.”

“Oh no, the dog/cat/ferret/child chewed through another screen.”

“All the dust from the construction site next door is horrible.”

If you’re saying anything like that, maybe it’s time for a ‘spring cleaning’.

If you don’t have the time, get in touch. We have a guy who cleans porches and patios.

If you want to clean it yourself and have one of our awnings or vinyl window installations, call or e-mail us for specialized instructions or cleaner. I have a sheet of instructions I can send you, and we sell the vinyl cleaner in the office.

The main thing is, we want you to have a nice clean patio or porch that you can be proud of and enjoy without worrying about spending so much time taking care of it.

If we can help with that in any way, don’t hesitate to call.

Thanks,

David Powers, your guide to enjoying the outside parts of your home

What Do I Do with My Vinyl Windows in a Hurricane?

A couple of weeks ago our area here in Myrtle Beach got spared from the wrath of Hurricane Irma. It was a good wake up call, though, as most of us went ahead and completed some much needed preps on our homes and businesses.

We tied things down. We got rid of things laying around in yards. A few customers bought last minute storm panel installations. Everyone stocked up on bottled water.

And we got a lot of phone calls from our customers and even some of our competitor’s customers. Apparently, some of our competitors wouldn’t offer any help with the big pre-hurricane question…

What Do I Do with My Vinyl Windows in a Hurricane?

Here’s my advice.

Vinyl windows go by different names, but they’re all mostly the same, whether you call them vinyl windows, porch panels, vinyl panels, Eze-Breeze, or something else.

Almost all of them are rated for a certain wind speed. This means that during testing, some of the panels probably blew out of the frame. It also means they won’t warranty damage to the window panels if you leave them in during a hurricane.

Here’s a sticker from a window in our showroom that is on all of our vinyl windows.

The 65 mile per hour winds would place it in the tropical storm and above range.

This would mean that you should take all your panels out and put them in a big stack in the garage. Now, if you think about it, this is a pretty tedious process, especially if your forget to mark where they go. I mean, it would take you days to get them all figured out.

I don’t recommend taking them all out.

Here’s my recommendations on what to do, based on 30 years installing them, too many hurricane and tropical storm experiences, and having them on my own house.

If you have a lot of nice stuff in the room with vertical sliding windows, like a TV, expensive outdoor furniture, breakables, a mini bar, carpet, etc, leave the windows up. Don’t remove them. Don’t push them down. Take your chances. Honestly, I’ve seen very few of these ever blow out of the frame. I would rather protect what’s in the room from as much rain and wind as possible.

If the room is a basic outdoor use room with vertical vinyl windows and you’re worried about them, push them all to the bottom. By pushing them all down, you’ve strengthened the entire configuration by putting all the windows together in one section.

If you have large horizontal sliding panels like garage screens or sliding door sized sections, remove them and store them in the garage. These tend to blow out much easier and also make up a huge surface susceptible to puncture from blowing debris.

If you happen to have any windows damaged by blowing debris or wind blowing them out, once the hurricane has passed and we resume normal operations again, just bring them by. It doesn’t cost much to reroll new vinyl into the panes.

If you have any other questions leading up to or after a hurricane, please give us a call.
