Always Learning to Make Your Projects Better!

I was able to attend a roofing conference by GAF Roofing recently.

We don’t even do roofing unless it’s on our sunrooms, but it was a pretty awesome even to attend.

  • Networking with other construction business owners
  • Checking out new products
  • Finding better ways to help you- better warranties, maintenance programs, industry certifications, etc
  • Learning new Best Practices

I hope to be unveiling some new products and services to you soon based on what I saw and learned!

We’re all certifiable, and we’re using that to raise the bar.

You ever been in an auto body shop and see certificates all over the walls?

You’ll see everything from basic fender repair to obscure things like “small dent repair in the left rear quarter panel of a red minivan with a small dent from a shopping buggy in the Wal Mart parking lot”.

The certificates are there for a reason. It shows that the techs have taken training, passed a qualification test of some kind, and should know what they’re doing.

It speaks to professionalism and competence.

You won’t see that kind of thing in hardly any contractor offices. Most times, you won’t even see an office other than the front dash of the supervisor’s truck that doubles as his desk and trash can.

You can see it in ours. Here’s a recent certification I just renewed. Just for the renewal, I had to not only prove competence, but also supply proof that we have the right kind of insurance, warranty our work, and have a business set-up that will last.

This is only one of about a dozen certifications my guys carry from various manufacturer’s and safety agencies. We’re trying to raise the bar among the other “chuck in a truck” and fly-by-night contractors.

Invite us along for the ride working on your property, and you can see for yourself. Oh yeah, even though the boss does have some paperwork on his dash, we also have a real office and showroom where you can see and touch the product.

Thanks,

Dave

Is It Better to Remodel or Replace?

At some point we all have to make that dreaded choice of fixing or replacing.

Computer printer…Just replace it. They’re all made disposable these days.

Car…It just depends on the cost of the repairs and if you want to go deeper into debt on a new one.

Your house…This one just depends. It depends on so many things, like…

  • How long do you plan to live there?
  • Can you afford the remodel?
  • Do you hate your neighbors and want to leave your neighborhood as soon as possible?
  • Will it enhance your enjoyment of your house?

I go through this decision tree with just about all of my clients. Unfortunately, I can’t make this decision for you, although I’d love to say, “Yes. Absolutely. You need the remodel that I’m offering.”

Here’s what I’ll do instead. I’ll tell you a story about one of my clients.

These wonderful folks have a beach vacation home in one of the resorts here in Myrtle Beach. The home roof is nearing the end of its life and past repairs from other contractors are about to give out. They wanted me to come out and check on re-roofing their entire home and getting it ready for the next hurricane season. The roof is already leaking so the effects of another hurricane could be disastrous.

After getting the estimate they decided the price was in their budget and worth doing for the value and longevity of their home. They’re in a key spot right on the main road, near the store, and also with a great people-watching view.

Here are a couple of BEFORE photos…

Here are the AFTER photos. Since this was a camper only a few hundred yards from the beach, we recovered the entire roof with EPDM rubber for a lower wind profile and sealed it up tight.

Just remember when you think about repairing, remodeling, or moving, that you do need to think about things logically but don’t forget the emotional component as well. Some of our clients value things like privacy or an open view to watch the neighbors as much as cost.

Thanks for checking in…
